Charisse C is a DJ, Producer and Writer who has been an ambassador for Southern African music in the UK for ten years. I came across her via an innovative DJ set on Boiler Room in 2021 while deep diving on Amapiano, the South African House Music movement that has gone global over the last five years.
I speak to Charisse about how it emerged, the place it has in the British, and Global Electronic Music landscape and why people say Amapiano is ‘dead’ and the impact it has on the people that are in it. A parallel movement ‘Afro House’ which means different things to different people is having a moment globally too, and I ask Charisse about the overlaps between the two scenes, genres and movements.
This is a good introduction conversation if you are curious about Amapiano, new scene building, and a breakthrough DJ with new ideas.
